A common question with AI tools is whether they will pass an originality checker.

It’s important to understand because there can be negative consequences to submitting writing in an academic or professional setting that is not 100% unique.

In this post, I will share a rundown of the best originality checker tools to use with content generated by ChatGPT and other AI platforms.

What Is An Originality Checker?

An originality checker is any tool that scans written content to evaluate whether the text is unique and not plagiarized.

Originality checkers work by scanning the internet or any content database to see if any matches exist elsewhere.

Often, these tools will turn up false positives since your writing will likely contain common phrases.

But more importantly, an originality checker is looking for longer chunks of text that have been published previously.

I personally use this feature often, as well as Grammarly paraphrase.

It helps me to ensure my writing and research are well-sourced and unique.

2. Turnitin

If you are an educator or academic, this is your top option.

For everyone else, the Turnitin license is unfortunately only available to institutions like schools and universities.

Note: Turnitin does not publicly share its originality checker methodology.

But it is often leveraged by teachers to evaluate whether a student plagiarized all or portions of a written assignment or test.

While I have had my content checked by Turnitin, I cannot personally speak to how the platform performs in terms of originality and AI detection.

In terms of AI detection, the company offers this feature across several of its products including Turnitin Feedback Studio, Turnitin Originality, and Originality Check.

3. Originality AI

Originality AI is geared more toward marketers and content creators that are leveraging AI tools like ChatGPT.

With Originality AI, you can scan massive amounts of text so that you can address any instances of plagiarism or non-unique writing prior to publishing.

The service is relatively inexpensive for what you get.

The rate is $0.01 for every 100 words you check. And you pay only for what you use.

4. A Research Guide (Free)

If you want to avoid spending money, this tool is your best bet.

The website makes no guarantees as to the accuracy of its originality checker, but it can be helpful to detect any obvious cases of plagiarism.

One trick to supplement this tool is to simply use a Google search on portions of your text to see if the snippets appear anywhere else online.

Note: Be sure to add quotes around the text that you submit into Google so it searches for exact matches only.

ChatGPT is trained on a vast collection of publicly available text online.

So the platform will sometimes generate text that is verbatim or exactly matches existing writing.

How do I check originality of content?

Use a tool like Grammarly’s Plagiarism Checker or search for the text in question on Google or Bing with quotation marks around it.

There are also some free options like A Research Guide’s tool which performs a less sophisticated originality check on your writing.

Is there a Turnitin checker?

Turnitin’s checker is only available to educators and administrators at schools and universities.

There is no comprehensive option for students or other individuals to run their writing through Turnitin prior to final submission.

Your best option is to use a tool like Grammarly’s originality checker to decrease the risk of setting off Turnitin’s plagiarism flag.
